Winter Woes and A Very Cold Nose

Well, it is warmer out. That's nice. But the snow is back too. Tomorrow will probably be a snow day and somewhere somehow we established that any snow days the schools get, we get too. When they were little, I could lie to er, not inform them that buses weren't running and they didn't know the difference, but now they check, themselves. Ah well. We got lots of schooling in today. The pile of books in the living room attests to that...and we even got in a nice long hike. It was one of those perfect homeschool days when everyone is in a good mood (despite slight colds) and the pencils are sharp and the brains are too!

We are reading several good books together, Richard Wurmbrand's 'Tortured For Christ' and 'Hearts of Iron, Feet of Clay' by Gary Inrig.

I love the sounds of the boys voices too as they do their own Bible study before bed. I resist the urge to jump in and help so the theology is sometimes a little slanted but I can redirect that later on. We are given such a gift to be able to teach our children, but we need to give them plenty of time to be taught by the Holy Spirit too. I encourage lots of independent Bible reading. It amazes me, sometimes, what God lays on their tender hearts.

Anyhow, today was a blast, one of those "This is why I homeschool' days, and we capped it off with some outdoor fun.

  1. This post made me smile... because I too know how blessed I feel when our family has days such as the one you wrote about. Re-affirms that we are on the right journey

    1. I know, eh? Thankfully these days usually outweigh the 'other' ones :)

  2. We don't get snow in our part of the world. I'm actually grateful for that because I don't think that I could endure the cold for very long. :)

This was a joyful post to read. Reading it reminded me of how families stick together regardless of their situations.

    Blessings to you!

    1. Funny, I liked the cold better when I was younger! But it does make spring feel that much nicer!

  3. And they will always have the practice of reading the Bible and thinking about God! Thanks to you bringing them up doing so.

I only homeschooled one year, but when there were snow days, we trudged on with our learning feeling lucky we would be finished before the kids who went to school, come spring when the weather was warm here!

  5. Ha...your mother sounds like mine....quite cheery! I was so in awe over suzy snowflake when I was little! nice memories.
Simple pleasures were the best in the simpler days! I guess even the onions and potatoes know it is soon time to plant. And I never thought of that, the house plants are thriving right now with the bright sun!

  6. Hi! Yes, Jane revived a memory of valentine boxes for me too! I loved making one! When I homeschooled, one year is all i did, we did the same as you, sending valentines in the mail. The mail is fun! Anyway, so last night, i hunted out a shoe box and I am going to make a box. But to have it last for a longer period of time, I am decorating it in springy colors and putting cards throughout the year in it. Although nothing can quite take the place as a real valentine box! Memories! So sad my kids didn't do that in their schools! I always had them do it at home, though, but have forgotten for a couple of years.

  7. Well you will sure appreciate spring when it comes, after all your snow! Like the good old days! As soon as I get grandbabies I have some sewing planned ...just simple sewing. I made a box and I will probably post it later today....

  8. I suppose you might've gotten more snow! I am getting tired of winter already. I hear the birds singing this a.m. though!

  9. Hi! My husband suggested an external hard drive too! Although I hear that soon they will be obsolete with new technology...I don't think you can use them with the newer computers like ipads. Not that I would care to buy an ipad or anything...I don't change easy with technology! It took me over a decade to get a microwave oven. But that is a good suggestion, because my disc drive doesn't work on my computer so I can't put a cd (or whatever it is called) in to copy the pics. Well, I'm going to costco this a.m. because I got back my yearly check from them. My son suggested I try to use costco mostly for non-food, as it is worth the membership at least for that. Have a nice weekend!
